Target laboratory
The target laboratory of the division has a setup for making targets by the electron gun evaporation method using crucibles of different materials according to the need. In this method the sample (of which the target is to be made) is placed in the crucible. A beam of electron is allowed to fall on the sample by a magnetic field thereby following a circular path. The electron energy is converted into heat on stopping in the crucible material. The sample then evaporates and the evaporated sample material is deposited on glass substrates kept on top of the crucible. The thickness of the deposition is determined by a quartz monitor. After the desired deposition is complete the target is floated in water on the target mounts.
The target laboratory has also the facility for making targets by rolling.
