Simple physics ideas are used to derive an exact expression for a flat connection on the complement of a torus knot. The result is useful in constructing holonomies, and hence the representations, of the knot group -- an invariant of the knot. It is also a step forward in the direction of generalising the Aharonov-Bohm effect to a situation in which charged particles moving through force-free regions are scattered by impenetrable, knotted flux-tubes. An attempt will be made to make the mathematics comprehensible to physicists, and the physics understandable to all and sundry. |
