The 750 GeV resonance: A new continent or a false dawn?

Abstract        :

In mid-December, the ATLAS and the CMS collaborations announced their first results of the 13 TeV run at the LHC. The hint of a broad resonance, at a mass of about 750 GeV and decaying to two photons, was there. While this is not yet a conclusive discovery, or a 5 sigma signal in technical jargon, the result has created quite a sensation among the theorists and led to about 200 papers in the first six weeks. In this talk, I will describe some of the attempts to explain the signal, and also a few more avenues to explore.
